Welcome back to my 5-part series on everything you need to know to start your own business. This month is Black Business Month, and I'm excited to share what I know with you. Last week, we talked about putting yourself out there as an introvert. This week, it's all about client generation. Hard truth: if you don’t prioritize this as an entrepreneur, you have an expensive hobby, not a business.
If you're a Black woman who dreams of starting her own business, you're in the right place. Read on for the rest of this series.

Listen up, sis: I know you're out here in these streets building your empire while you hold down a full time job, but I’ma cut to the chase. Prioritizing clients is the name of the game, and no, I'm not just talking about your besties gushing over your new business cards (although they're pretty snazzy). Focus on what brings home the bacon—getting those amazing clients in the door.
Now, I've been where you are. When I launched my career coaching and consulting business ten years ago, it wasn't just about how much I knew; it was about making those connections that count. Here's how I did it:
First, I rallied my circle—those friends, colleagues, and folks who know I'm the real deal. I shamelessly asked for referrals, and guess what? It worked like a charm. Being crystal clear about what I offered and the kind of clients I was after made it a no-brainer for them to send potential business my way.
And oh, did I mention my love for writing? Yep, I put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, more like) and started blogging my heart out. Writing about what I knew, positioned me as a trailblazer in my field, and pulled in clients who were thirsty for my expertise. Did you know that around 409 million internet users gobble up about 20 billion blog pages every month? That's like Beyoncé-level attention, my friend. Blogging isn't just a wordy hobby—it's your golden ticket to expanding your reach and sealing the deal.
And don't even get me started on newsletters. Like I talked about last week, I masterminded my email game, building a list that was more lit than a Brooklyn block party. Consistent newsletters kept me on the radar, and before I knew it, curious souls from my list were sliding into my inbox, ready to collaborate.
So, here's your action plan, boo:
Round up your squad. Identify everyone in your network who needs a dose of your brilliance. LinkedIn is going to be your best friend for this. Spread the word about your business, spell out what you're all about, and give 'em a clear invitation to be part of your referral posse.
Embrace the art of blogging. Put on your customer hat and think: what problems are they wrestling with? What can you drop that'll make their jaws hit the floor? Sprinkle those blog posts with keywords that'll have Google doing a double-take. Your business deserves the spotlight in those search results!
Pro tip: You're not just selling widgets, you're selling YOU. If you’re waiting for a cosmic sign—this is it! Get proactive, ask for the sale, and watch those dollar signs roll in.
Oh, and one more thing. Your clients won't always come knocking in ways you predict. That's where the magic happens. So, toss aside the crystal ball and own your story. Shout it from the rooftops, the subway platform, wherever. Share your journey and watch those connections bloom.
Now, tell me, which nugget of wisdom are you ready to rock from this list? Hit me up, spill the tea, and tag me on Instagram @arianehunter. And remember, the next step of your stellar business journey is just around the corner. Stay tuned, and I'll catch you next week! 🚀💃🏾
